If You Were a Pie, What kind of Pie Would You be?

Believe it or not, the ‘if you were a…. what …..would you be?’ (insert fruit, animal, colour or similar) is an actual interview question. Now, the interviewer really isn’t looking to find out what animal you’d love as a pet. This type of question is designed to see how you think on your feet, work under pressure, to find out about your strengths and a little about your personality.
Today is National Pie day so just for fun, answer this question…
If you were a pie, what kind of pie would you be?
Not easy is it. If you’re anything like me, your mind is just ticking over what I’d like for dinner. To help you along, here are some tips to answer this question, should you ever be confronted with it.
Consider your strengths
Think about your strengths and then think of a pie that embodies those strengths. Make sure the strengths you’re picking are relevant to the job. For example:
I would be an apple pie because it is a popular choice for a variety of people. It works very well on its own or is just as delicious if you combine it with another fruit such as blackberries. It is very versatile and can be eaten hot or cold. Similarly, I am able to get on with people no matter their level in an organisation. I am motivated to work confidently alone but also work very well in a team. I am flexible and able to use my transferable skills to adapt to situations quickly.
Show your personality
Yes, think about strengths but also let some personality shine through. Are you an apple pie or is that too traditional and mainstream for you? If so, you have the basis, just find another pie that encapsulates the same strengths but that is more you.
Do you have some causes that you’re particularly passionate about? Can you mix these in with your answer? Maybe you are a strict vegan and this can be represented in your pie as well as considering your strengths. Just be careful here not to highlight anything that could be taken as negative.
It doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong
Don’t get in a faff about making sure you’re pie filling goes together well, whether it’s an actual thing or whether it really can be eaten raw or cooked. The interviewer is looking at your reasoning and creativity, not how much you know about cooking. As long as you have a good reason for why you picked your pie, it doesn’t really matter whether it’s tasty or not.
Take away (get it???)
I don’t know of any instances where clients I’ve worked with have been asked to answer, ‘if you were a pie…’ but certainly fruit, animal and colour are popular when it comes to this type of questions. It’s important to remember it doesn’t matter which entity your interviewer choses, the principle is the same. Follow the above pointers and you’re good to go!
